Transportation Options:

  • By car, Route No.1 - Sukhumvit Road (Highway No.3): Starting from Bangkok passes Bangpu District, Chonburi Town, Bangsaen, Sri Racha District, Pattaya, Hat Jomtien, Sattahip District, Ban Chang District to arrive in the center of Rayong Province. The total distance is approximately 220 kilometres.
  • By car, Route No.2 - The most popular route, starting from Bangna-Trat Road (Highway No.34) via Bang Phli and Bang Bo District (Samut Prakan Province) and Highway No.3 at km. 70. The total distance is approximately 220 kilometres.
  • By car, Route No.3 - Use the Motorway, starting from Phatthanakarn Road, Prawet District, Bangkok and drive all the way up to Pattaya (120 kilometres), then switch to use Highway No.36 and proceed for another 50 kilometres to Rayong.
  • By air, Bangkok Airways operates a flight everyday from Phuket via Koh Samui to Rayong - U Ta Pao International Airport (Pattaya).

Laem Mae Phim (Mae Phim Cape)

A long shady beach with accommodations favored by Thai vacationers, Laem Mae Phim or Mae Phim Cave is located about 15 km east of Ban Phe. The bungalows and guesthouses are clustered near the village at the east end of the beach, where there are also seafood restaurants, a dive shop and souvenir shops. The beach is better and less crowded toward the western end, especially on weekends when the section near the village tends to fill up with locals and day trippers from Bangkok. Snorkeling gear, inner tubes, beach chairs and umbrellas can all be rented from local vendors. Boats for day trips to see the sea turtles on nearby Ko Man Nai and Ko Thalu islands can be hired in the village.

Sunthon Phu, Thailand's Shakespeare, described Koh Kaew Pitsadan (the magical crystal island), which is believed to be the present Koh Samet, in his famous Thai literature Phra Aphaimanee as a beautiful island that shelters his main character from a lovelorn giant - she is broken-hearted and dies on the crystal sandy beach of the island. Even though you won't see her remains anywhere on Koh Samet, you're sure to see its crystal white sandy beaches, especially on the Had Sai Kaew or Sai Kaew Beach. Koh Samet was named after the Samet Tree or the cajuput tree that grows everywhere on the island. To reach the island, tourists must take a local fishing boat, from Ban Phe in Muang District of Rayong Province for about 30 minutes. There are direct routes to some beaches including Had Sai Kaew and Ao Wong Duan, from which one can walk to other beaches through a relatively primitive inland road network. Most of the beaches are located on the northern and eastern sides of this T-shaped island whereas only a few, that is, Ao Prao, Ao Kham and Ao Kiu Na Nai lie on the west. It is more convenient to reach Ao Prao by a direct ferry from Ban Phea.

Five kilometres further from Laem Mae Phim on the beach road is the Sunthorn Phu Monument. The place was built to commemorate one of Thailand’s most famous poets in the early Rattanakosin era, two centuries ago. Sunthon Phu, a Rayong native who known as , Thailand's Shakespeare, had written his literary works as Phra Aphai Mani being his most well-known work. There are statues of Sunthon Phu and characters from his famous literature.

These small islands comprising of Koh Man Nai, Koh Man Klang, and Koh Man Nok are located approximately 5 kilometres off shore from Laem Mae Phim, and are famous for their immaculate white sandy beaches. Koh Man Nai has been developed into a Sea Turtle Preservation Sanctuary open to the public. Resorts on Koh Man Klang and Koh Man Nok offer accommodation packages that usually include boat transfer and meals and are famous for their immaculate white sandy beaches and hip boutique resorts.

Ban Phe
 
Ban Phe

A seaside town located approximately 19 kilometres southeast of the Rayong city, Ban Phe is the best place to relax on a long white sandy beach while sampling sumptuous seafood. Ban Phe is a major fishing community in the province, hence, the wide range of fresh and preserved seafood and other local products. Ban Phe is also the departure point for Koh Samet.

As Ban Phe is a port and the main exit point from the mainland to Koh Samet, many people miss the area’s charms and attractions. For instance, another short taxi trip will take you to Suan Son (Pine) Park, an area of extensive coastline and excellent white sandy beaches. It is a place locals favour for picnics because of its shady areas and great view of the beach. The stalls and restaurants around the beaches offer some excellent seafood dishes. If you find yourself in Ban Phe for any length of time and you are looking for something worthwhile to do, a visit to Suan Son Park would certainly be in order.

Khao Chamao - Khao Wong National Park

This national park was established in 1975, covering an area of 52,300 rai. This lush forest with a great variety of flora and fauna is the watershed of the Prasae River. The national park has two nature trails for tourists to explore herbs and animal behaviour. The trails are two kilometres and three kilometres long, respectively. To explore the trail, registration at the tourist centre is required in advance. Houses and tents are available for tourists. Attractions in the national park are: Khao Chamao Waterfall or Khlong Nam Sai Waterfall, Pha Sawan Viewpoint, Khlong Pla Kang Waterfall, Khlong Hin Phoeng Waterfall, Krommaluang Chumphon Shrine, and more.

Ao Kai - Laem Tan (Kai Bay - Tan Cape)

This little cape, situated beyond Laem Mae Phim in Klaeng District, is located near a small fishing village, where the main occupation is to pickle jellyfish. Set in tranquil ambience the place is marvelous for seafood lovers with seafood restaurants providing reasonably priced seafood dishes of good quality. Traveling to Koh Man Klang can be done by taking a speedboat from here.

Mae Ramphueng Beach

This 12-kilometre stretch of white sandy beach is a perfect place to enjoy the scenery while swimming. Mae Ramphueng Beach trails along the way to meet Ban Kon Ao, where a small fishing community can be found. Various accommodations and restaurants are available.

Saeng Chan Beach

Situated approximately 7 kilometres from the Rayong Town, this beach is connected to Laem Charoen beach and is also suitable for swimming. Saeng Chan beach is a popular place to stay as it is in easy reach of the Rayong Town and the many luxurious hotels and residences offer very nice views of the beach and commanding horizon. Behind the Beach Road is a street packed with great restaurants and bars, while the adjoining Laem Chareon is a large fishing village with numerous seafood restaurants.
